FOCA Postcards To Be Sent To Legislators

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia is in the middle of a postcard campaign to oppose the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA), in cooperation with other dioceses around the country.

The postcard campaign, which is designed to send a strong message to the new Obama administration that many Americans do not support unrestricted abortion, began last Sunday. Thousands of postcards were distributed to parishioners throughout the diocese.

“At this time of serious national challenges, Americans should unite to serve the good of all, born and unborn,” reads the postcard. “The Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA), the most radical and divisive pro-abortion bill ever introduced in Congress, would create a “fundamental right” to abortion that government could not limit but would have to support. FOCA would overturn many existing widely supported policies, including laws protecting parental involvement and conscience rights and those preventing partial-birth abortion and taxpayer funding of abortion. Please oppose FOCA or any similar measure, and retain laws against federal funding and promotion of abortion. As your constituent, I would appreciate a written response telling me how you would vote on these matters.”

The postcards are pre-addressed to the House of Representatives and Senate in Washington, D.C., for distribution to politicians. Participants must fill in the names of their federal representatives. Pennsylvania’s senators are U.S. Sens. Robert Casey, D, and Arlen Specter, R.

Participants must look up their congressional representative if they do not know who it is. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia has a mechanism to do so from their Web site at archphila.org, or participants can contact the House of Representatives.

The House of Representatives Web site has a zipcode-based tool for finding representatives. The House of Representatives can be contacted at (202) 224-3121.
