Congress is set to vote today on a controversial measure that would extend hate crime protections to gays and lesbians. Supporters of the bill claim the legislation is necessary to protect the rights of a vulnerable minority, while opponents charge the bill is a guided attempt to restrict religious liberties.

At issue is whether hate crimes, protection is necessary for gays and lesbians. Conservative activists fear the legislation could eventually be used to silence preachers who teach homosexuality is sinful from the pulpit.

And, even though the hate crimes bill before Congress has First Amendment protections to prevent the legislation from being used to infringe on religious liberties, conservatives are not comforted.
