Philadelphia Area Students Win Scholarships

Dozens of local high school seniors were among the more than 2,800 National Merit Scholarship winners announced on Monday by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).

Funded by colleges and universities, the scholarships range between $500 and $2,000 annually for as much as four years, according to an NMSC press release. The students among the more than 8,200 students who will be awarded scholarships nationwide and were chosen from more than 1.5 million applicants, the release states. Winners were selected based on a superb academic record, teacher recommendation, SAT scores and written sampling, according to the release.

The following students from the listed high schools received scholarships from colleges and universities:

Cheltenham: Sari J. Zlotnick of Elkins Park from the University of Maryland.


Conestoga: Kirstin M. Clouser of Berwyn from Bucknell University; Catharine G. Parker of Malvern from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Kurt S. Rohrbeck of Devon from Washington University in St. Louis.

Council Rock: Lauren E. Mateer of Richboro from Ithaca College.

Downingtown West: Kaleb C. Williams of Downingtown from the University of Alabama.

Episcopal Academy: Steven K. Wu of Ardmore from Northwestern University.

Friends Central: Jacob R. Schutzman of Narberth from Washington University in St. Louis.

Germantown Friends School: Rebecca G. Gelles of Philadelphia from Carleton College.


Harriton: Aaron D. Dawson of Haverford from Macalester College; John M. Slochower of Gladwyne from the Washington University in St. Louis.

Haverford High: Alexander A. Willis of Havertown from Macalester College.

Home Schooled: Eric B. Goldfischer of Havertown from Macalester College.

St. Joseph’s Preparatory School: Shaun T. Gallagher of Maple Glen and Michael J. Leithead of Churchville both from Fordham University.

Unionville: Marianne W. Dreisbach of Kennett Square from Vanderbilt University.

Upper Darby: Daniel D. Edgar of Drexel Hill from Villanova University.

Upper Dublin: Anthony J. Dimauro of Dresher from Northwestern University.

Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy: Aaron P. Cogbill of Wallingford from Oberlin College.

J.R. Masterman: Allison M. Beik of Philadelphia from New York University.

Lancaster Country Day School: Magdalena C. Newhouse of Middletown from Oberlin College.

Lower Merion: Christopher W. Rowe of Wynnewood from Northwestern University; Jessica M. Scolnic of Wynnewood from Tufts University.

Methacton: Jayson R. Baman of Norristown from the University of Rochester.

Neshaminy: Yijie Feng of Langhorne from the University of Southern California.
