Toomey Ahead Of Both Specter And Sestak

Republican former Congressman Pat Toomey leads in a poll against both of the Democrats vying to run against him in the 2010 U.S. Senate election, according to a Rasmussen poll.

Rasmussen Reports said today that 48 percent of Pennsylvania voters surveyed support the former Lehigh Valley representative while only 36 percent back Democratic Senator Arlen Specter.

U.S. Representative Joe Sestak, D-7th, of Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties only got 35 percent of poll respondents’ support in a match-up against Toomey, with the Republican getting 43 percent.

At this early stage, Mr. Sestak is the underdog in the Democratic primary, trailing Mr. Specter by 13 points, according to a Rasmussen survey whose results were announced yesterday.

Mr. Toomey’s partisan backing appears much stronger than that of Mr. Specter, who gets only 61 percent of his fellow Democrats’ support. Eighty percent of voters who identified themselves as Republicans said they would vote for Mr. Toomey in a contest against Mr. Specter.

The same survey also found that only 39 percent of Pennsylvania voters approve of Democratic Governor Ed Rendell’s job performance. In June, his job-approval rating was 53 percent.
