Poll: More Identify As Conservatives Than As Liberals
D.C. The Exception
By Bradley Vasoli, The Bulletin
More citizens identify themselves as political conservatives than as political liberals in every state in the U.S., according to results of a Gallup Poll announced yesterday.
Forty percent of over 160,000 people surveyed nationwide embraced the conservative label. Thirty-one percent of the total group polled identified as “very conservative.” In contrast, 21 percent called themselves liberal and five percent identified as “very liberal.”
In Pennsylvania, 38 percent of respondents called themselves conservative while only 21 percent called themselves liberal. Thirty-eight percent said they were moderate.
Alabama respondents were the most conservative in the U.S., totaling 49 percent of those surveyed. Only 15 percent of Alabamans identified as liberal. Massachusetts residents were the most liberal, with 29 percent embracing that label. Thirty percent of that state’s residents called themselves conservative.
The District of Columbia, in contrast to all the states, had more liberals than conservatives.
