Editorial: Finally Speaking Up
On Tuesday, Pennsylvania voters chose seven new judges to her “higher courts.” Six of the seven winners in Tuesday’s races for Supreme, Superior and Commonwealth Courts were pro-life judges. Only one Democrat won in those three major races where seven critical seats were filled in Pennsylvania’s “high” court system. Pennsylvanians are no longer just throwing things at their television screens in frustration, but they are taking their frustration to the ballot box and the streets.
On Tuesday, conservatives had great wins at the ballot box. Those wins in the higher courts of our Commonwealth cannot be downplayed by supposed Democratic gains in mayoral races in Allentown, Pittsburgh, York and Harrisburg. One headline lauded these so-called gains, but in reality the Democratic incumbent got re-elected or another Democrat got elected to fill the seat in a bastion of liberalism. No surprises there.
Pro-life judicial winners included one new Supreme Court Judge, Joan Orie Melvin, three new Superior Court Judges, Judy Olson, Sally Mundy and Paula Ott, and two new Commonwealth Court Judges, Patricia McCullough and Kevin Brobson. Only the leading contenders for the fourth Superior Court slot, which appears headed to a recount, are pro-abortion.
On Tuesday, the ballot box, two days later, the streets of Washington, D.C. to participate in an “Emergency House Call to Congress Rally” on the West Lawn of the US Capitol Building. With less than a week’s notice, about twenty buses from both ends of the state organized to make yet another trip to our nation’s Capitol. As at the 912 Rally on Sept. 12th, concerned Pennsylvanians joined other concerned Americans in saying ‘Enough is enough’ and again asking the question, “Can you hear us now?”
It is very encouraging to see those concerned with the direction our nation is heading stop yelling at their televisions, become educated on the stands candidates take and then get out and vote. Additionally, on very short notice, grassroots organizers came together and again organized buses to make the trip to DC to deliver this message to those who were elected to represent them, “We are watching how well you listen to us and we vote.”
With estimates of crowds up to 25,000 at the “Emergency House Call Rally” on Thursday will Congress ignore the voices of concerned Americans who do not want a government takeover of health care – an additional government takeover of 6 percent of the nation’s economy? After the rally, thousands flooded the hallways of Congress seeking the office of the one elected to represent them. Will those “Representatives” represent the people for whom they work and who pay their salaries or will they bow to Party pressure placed upon them to “Follow the Leader?”
An awakened and energized electorate will prove most challenging – to both of the nation’s two major political parties. Patriotic Americans want their country back and are taking to the ballot box and streets to reclaim her!
