Haggard is one of the original outlaws of Country music that populated the 60’s and 70’s. He is known for his hit songs: “That’s the way love goes,” “If we make it through December,” and “Okie from Muskogee.” He is heralded as one of the major creators of the “Nashville” country style that has continued to influence artists today.
Haggard’s songs tackled many taboo, even by today’s standards, subjects such as divorce, spouse abuse, and alcoholism. He famously once told Johnny Cash that he greatly enjoyed his prison tours, and when asked how Haggard had seen the concerts, Haggard replied he had seen them because he was serving a jail sentence for robbery at the time. Haggard began his music career playing for his prison’s country music band.
Merle is known for his intimate guitar playing and lyrics that directly speak of his life experiences. His voice still sounds great even in his older years. This may be the last time country fans will get to see this legend perform live.
